What are the El Chaltén trails like today?
On this page we publish what our guides tell us when they come back from each outing: whether the trail is good, needs care or is closed, with the date of the report. A trail with no news in the last 10 days is not shown.
Who decides whether a trail is closed?
Los Glaciares National Park. In El Chaltén the Park’s Visitor Centre at the entrance to town reports it (phone +54 2962 493004). Before you set off, check the wind forecast too.
Do I need crampons?
In winter (May to September) you walk with crampons and poles, which are required. In spring there can still be snow or ice up high, like the last stretch to Laguna de los Tres: we flag it here when our guides find it.
